Rest In Peace Walter Berger – 1929-2021 – Gone But Not Forgotten

It is with deep sadness that we have to report that the legendary founder of Berger Bullets – Walter Berger has passed away at the age of 92. The leader of the popular bullet company, Walter Berger was also a member of the Benchrest Hall of Fame where he achieved membership in 1982 and was also an avid competitive shooter where he famously used his own bullets for several of his competition wins.

Walter Berger began making bullets in 1954 as he saw a lack of what he considered to be “exacting standards” within the industry. Originally working out of his own garage, other shooters began to take note of his success and he began to turn his hobby into a business at the urging of his wife Eunice who preceded him in death in 2004. Eunice was not only one of the inspirations for pushing Walter into turning his hobby into a business but was also herself an accomplished marksman.

Walter always strived to improve his loadings and his precision wherever he could and with the onset of automated reloading machines, he wanted to make sure that these same automated processes could churn out the same exacting standards that his hand-made custom bullets did. As late as 2019, Walter was still a big influence within the firearms community being named Team USA Rifle Captain and even competed in the 2019 World Benchrest Championships. In addition to his competitive shooting which resulted in the quality bullet components we have today for that sport, Walter was also a frequent hunter and as a result, also helped develop several hunting bullets to expand the Berger bullet lineup.
